Harmonics in Low-voltage Three-phase Four-wire Electric Distribution Systems and Filtering Solutions
Description
Presentation slides from the February 13, 2001 Internet Seminar. Abstract: Proliferation of single-phase non-linear power electronic loads has resulted in excessive harmonic current in today's three-phase four-wire low-voltage power distribution systems. This seminar will outline some of the potential problems caused by these harmonics in phases and neutral conductors and will examine passive and active filtering solutions.

Use of Planning Studies to Estimate Security Margins in Real-Time
Description
In this presentation, the possibility of more fully exploiting planning studiesis discussed. The detailed planning studies are recorded and a fast patternmatching approach is applied to estimate system limits. Critical elements of such an approach are developed and numerical results on the WSCC system are presented. These are the presentation slides from the September 11, 2001 Internet seminar.

The Future of Distribution Systems in the Deregulated Environment: Opportunities and Challenges
Description
Restructuring of the electric utility industry is causing widespread changes in the power distribution sector. There is an increasing customer demand for high-quality power delivered with great reliability. A variety of technological solutions are being developed and perfected to cater to these demands. In the first part of the talk the changes taking place due to deregulation will be delineated. The second part will focus on identifying the opportunities and challenges from a technological point of view. These are the presentation slides from the March 6, 2001 Internet Seminar.

Incorporating Physical Constraints and Transaction Costs into Option-Based Valuation of Real Assets
Description
In the vertical integrated utilityindustry generation assets weretraditionally valued using productionsimulation coupled with discounted cashflow analysis. With the emergence of theelectric industry restructuring market-based approaches employing ?realoptions? valuation techniques aregaining popularity. Financial optionbased valuation methods employfinancial instruments as models ofgeneration assets (e.g. Spark Spreadcall options) while abstractingphysical constraints and transactioncosts. Here we explicitly considerphysical operating constraints andtransaction costs in an approximate wayto examine the impact of such aspectson the valuation. These are the Power Point slidesfrom the PSERC Internet Seminar onJanuary 23, 2001.
